Finding solutions

Writer: Kimberly LyallKimberly Lyall

When we are asked to face difficult challenges, our instincts are often to solve problems as quickly as possible - to get out of the disruption and discomfort as fast as we can.

But that disruption and discomfort is powerful fuel for change! It forces us to do things differently, creating an opportunity to do them even better.

As we grapple with the challenges facing us right now, let’s resist the urge to seek what feels safe, comfortable, and quick. Trust yourself to sit with the discomfort for a while and let it push you into exploring how to do things differently.

Here are three strategies to help you discover new solutions:

  1. Discuss the challenge with someone who has different experiences, knowledge, or perspectives than yours and ask for their thoughts and ideas. Better yet, ask several people who are different than you! Seeing a challenge from a different point of view helps you to uncover critical elements you might be missing.

  1. Think of an audacious, big goal and decide to believe it is possible, then brainstorm as many crazy ideas as you and your team can think of to make it happen. You’ll stumble on something that can work using this process!

  1. Go for a long walk. Seriously! Walking increases blood flow to your brain, enhancing cognitive function and stimulating the creative parts of your brain. It also relieves stress, creating better focus, and a clearer mind. Many problems have suddenly been solved while walking.

Nobody likes being forced to change, but challenging ourselves to find unique and effective solutions puts power back into your hands!

Please share this with someone you know who is looking for solutions right now.
