The recent news around politics and tariff talks has created a lot of uncomfortable emotions for many of us. If you’ve felt disbelief, anger, sadness, frustration, and even hopelessness, you are not alone.

We are taught from childhood that there are certain rules in society that govern how we behave, how we treat others, and how we honour agreements we’ve made.
These rules are more than directions for how we interact with each other - they influence our values and beliefs. So when someone breaks these rules, it is deeply unsettling. Even more so when that person has extraordinary power and their actions affect millions of people.
Your core values, and sense of right and wrong, were challenged. The very foundation of society, and how we behave in it, was challenged.

Your trust was broken.
I learned this lesson the hard way years ago when an employee committed major fraud in the organization I was leading. I learned that when we all have similar values, the rules work. But if someone doesn’t share those values and looks for loopholes for their own gain, they will find them.
The past few weeks have taught us that we are vulnerable to those with different values than us, so if you haven’t felt like yourself lately, it’s okay. This is a time to be kind to yourself and others - to reconnect to your own values and get yourself back on solid ground.
That kindness reminds us that there is still hope.
